Attack of Giant Cellphones

Apple is soon releasing a sixth-generation iPhone with a larger screen. Along with our children, our gizmos are also growing up right before our eyes.

Cartoonist J.J. McCullough asks: Is this a good thing?

Sunday supermoon

A rare treat for the moonstruck romantics and werewolves - supermoon is visible in the sky if you wake up before sunrise.

The moon rotates around the sun and during that 29 day rotation cycle, at a certain time it gets closer to Earth. Now, a full moon occurs during that 29 day period as well. A supermoon occurs when the moon is closest to Earth and when the full moon occurs - a combination of both scenarios. Tomorrow's supermoon occurs precisely at 7:33 AM, Sunday morning.

The moon's effect on ocean tides is higher during a supermoon than any other time, so expect higher and lower tides than usual.

If for some reason you cannot make it to this supermoon, or if you are looking for a more thrilling lunar event, a larger supermoon is expected on Sept. 28, 2015, and the largest supermoon until 2034 will occur on Nov. 14, 2016. Am marking my google calendar to remind me of these events. It is quite romantic to watch the moon and full moon; the supermoon is even better.

Summer is here

Let's welcome the first day of summer 2013. June 21 is called the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere and simultaneously the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere. On June 21, there are 24 hours of daylight north of the Arctic Circle and 24 hours of darkness south of the Antarctic Circle. The sun's rays are directly overhead along the Tropic of Cancer on June 21.

Without the tilt of the earth's axis, we would have no seasons. The sun's rays would be directly overhead of the equator all year long. When the axis tilts towards the sun, as it does between June and September, it is summer in the northern hemisphere but winter in the southern hemisphere. Alternatively, when the axis points away from the sun from December to March, the southern hemisphere enjoys the direct rays of the sun during their summer months.

Around December 21 the solstices are reversed and winter begins in the northern hemisphere.

Guns and doctors

Here is more info on the above topic - an interesting read. Have some more free time - here is another supporting article on the same topic.

Consider this as humor and don't pay too much attention. Comparing doctor deaths to accidental firearm deaths is meaningless, especially because doctors are dealing with people who are sick in the first place, some of whom are at high risk for death or have gone through high risk medical procedures.

There was one more part to the original article, "Out of concern for the public at large, we withheld the statistics on lawyers for fear the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention."

Election Tech 2012

Here is a piece of totally useless information:

Imagine you're launching a company and only have six months to deliver a product. You face a competitor that has been in your industry four years longer than you with twice your staff and twice the budget. If you don't make your deadline, you're out of business.

That, in a nutshell, was the situation facing the technology team for Mitt Romney's presidential campaign. The Obama for America (OFA) organization had the advantage: it didn't have to wade through the primary season first, allowing OFA's technology team to focus on building an infrastructure. Based on an Ars analysis of the Romney campaign's financial reports, Romney's team had less to work with and passed the lion's share of technology-focused spending directly to advertising companies and telemarketers. This left Team Romney's tech squad with only a fraction of the budget for consulting, services, and infrastructure.

Here is that story.

And... if that interests you,

How Team Obama's tech efficiency left Romney IT in dust. Click here to read more if you care about numbers.

Yes - I stared a new label, 'Useless Info' to file info such as this one.
