2 Samuel 19

David Mourns (continued...)
Despite the victory of his men, king David continued mourning the death of his son, Absalom.
2 Samuel 19:4 The king covered his face and cried aloud, “O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!”
Joab became bit frustrated at this and went into the king's house and questioned his actions. He said he need to encourage his troops for saving the lives of his entire family.

David Returns to Jerusalem
In the absence of a ruler, people considered bringing king David back to the throne. Every cloud has a silver lining, and king David won the hearts of all men in the kingdom. Along with all his men, king David returned to Jerusalem.

Amasa was appointed commander over Joab. This was a political move to secure the allegiance of those who followed Amasa.

Shimei, the one who pelted stones on king David came to meet him and fell prostate before him and begged for mercy. When Abishai interfered, the king said, "You have no right to interfere, and today I am the king." He pardoned Shimei.

Mephibosheth, Jonathan's son went down to meet the king. He had not trimmed his moustache, washed his clothes or taken care of his legs from the day king David left Jerusalem. The king asked him the most logical question, "Where he was, and why he did not go with king David?" Mephibosheth answered that Ziba had betrayed him and did not help him upon a saddled donkey.

The king then ordered the land to be divided between Mephibosheth and Ziba. Mephibosheth let Ziba keep the land, as he only cared about the king's safety.

In short, king David pardoned those who wronged him and honored those who stayed loyal to him.

My Thoughts (notes for myself)
Joab was right in holding a firm dialog with king David.

Shimei is a smart cookie - he knew when to pelt stones on king David and when to beg for his pardon.

Mephibosheth seems to have his father's huge heart too. He gave away all those land to his caretaker, Ziba.

King David exhibited the mark of a brilliant gentleman - by pardoning those who offended him, and by honoring those who exalted him.

Useless statistics - Cities that spoil kids

For a family making more than $100k per year, says, parents could end up spending more than half a million dollar on the kid from birth to age 18 - that is excluding buying branded clothing and high end electronic gadgets.

With child spending already breaking the bank for many, wanted to find out which cities spoil their kids the most. To do so, they examined spending by households with children at stores that sell toys, clothing and other services for tots, kids, and teens.

This appeared in an article titled, 'Cities That Spoil Their Kids the Most'. Useful to parents, but useless statistics for kids unless they want to figure out where they stack up. Wondering where out city Atlanta stands - take a peek.

Smallest feet

Did you know - Ms Liu, a 90-years-old woman from China is the current record holder for the smallest feet in the world?

Ms Liu practiced foot binding (the important tradition of China in the past) since she was just five. Until now, her feet are on the size of a 10-year-old girl.

This belongs to what I call 'The Cinderella feet.'

Snake bit woman - snake died

Last March while I was travelling to New York, I happened to read this in the New York Daily:

An Israeli model and actress Orit Fox was posing for a seductive photo shoot with a massive boa. Orit tried to ramp up the sex factor by licking the snake, which proved costly when she loosened her grip on the snake.  The reptile went straight for the model's left breast implant and latched onto it for several seconds before being pulled off by an assistant. See the video below.

Orit was rushed to a local hospital, where she was given a tetanus shot - she is just fine.

However, the poor snake wasn't so lucky and died of silicone poisoning few hours later.

Moral: be careful while dealing with women.

"My car won't start when I buy pistachio."

The manager of a Texas automobile dealership thought the woman who confronted him with this bizarre statement must be crazy. It seems that on hot summer days she would drive to a certain shop for ice cream to take home. It never failed, she said: the car would always start when she bought chocolate, vanilla or strawberry - but when she bought pistachio, she got stranded.

The manager had to see this to believe it. He tried a chocolate trip, and the car worked fine. Vanilla or strawberry - no problem. Then came the trip for pistachio and, sure enough, the engine refused to start.

It was an engineering troubleshooter whose insight solved the problem. He observed that chocolate, vanilla and strawberry were pre-packaged flavors, sold right out of the freezer. But take-home orders of pistachio were hand-packed at the shop. The time needed to have the pistachio packed was just enough for the car to develop vapor lock in the summertime Texas heat. The woman wasn't crazy after all - her car wouldn't start when she bought pistachio.

New Concept

Here is a new concept of a public restroom.  This is how it looks from the outside.

Once inside, it looks like this:

It's made entirely of one-way glass! No one can see you from the outside, but when you are inside it's like sitting in a clear glass box!

Today is 11/1/11, or in English calendar 1/11/11 - a binary date.  According to the Washington post, 11/1/11 is a mystical date and there is some hidden supernatural ability.  It seems, kissing a clock today at 11:11 brings you good luck.

Oh well, if you missed it in the morning, try kissing in the evening!

Good Luck!

The lawn chair man

Please don't try this at home!!

BTW, this was back in 1982.  After spending some time in the sky, he shot several balloons, and then accidentally dropped his pellet gun overboard. During his descent, the balloons' dangling cables got caught in a power line, causing a blackout in a Long Beach neighborhood for 20 minutes.

Standing seat

In order to save aircraft seat space, an Italian company Aviointeriors' came up with an idea.  It was to decrease the legroom and design 'standing seat' which has 23 inches of legroom, instead of the current economy class average of 30 inches.

During last week's Aircraft Interiors Expo in Long Beach, California, a man tries on the new 'standing seat'.

Black bear crashes in runaway car

This past week in Denver, CO, a black bear attracted by the smell of a peanut butter sandwich managed to open the door of a car, climb in and got stuck, knocking the gear stick into neutral and sending the car rolling down a slope into trees.

The blare of the car horn alerted the members of the Story family who realized 17-year-old Ben's Toyota was no longer parked in the driveway of their home in Larksspur near Denver.

When they went to explore they discovered the car and trapped culprit at the bottom of the hill -- a giant bear with teeth bared and claws tearing through the car's interior.

The bear was trapped inside the car for two hours before police were able to release the animal who ran off into nearby woods.

Ben and his sister Becky said the bear was likely lured into the car by a certain scintillating scent.

"There was a peanut butter sandwich in the back seat," Ben told reporters, adding that his car was ruined.

Here is the actual news.

Miracle of the coins

In the above picture taken on Monday, July 5, 2010, a highway worker sweeps euro coins after a truck carrying some €2 million ($2.5 million) in coins overturned in Foggia, southern Italy, unloading its contents onto the highway and leading motorists to hit the brakes and dig in.

It wasn't exactly pennies from heaven but it was perhaps the next best thing: a truck carrying 2.5 million euros in coins overturned on a highway in southern Italy and motorists picked up the money like mushrooms.

In the accident, the truck's rear door popped open and what followed must have seemed like a massive slot machine win.

Before police arrived, motorists stopped their cars and made off with about 10,000 euros in one and two euro coins being transported from the Italian mint to local banks.

One called it "The miracle of the coins."

Police said Tuesday that it was impossible to establish how much money had been stolen, as many of the €1 and €2 coins remain on the highway.

Women driver

A woman was stranded in the air when her car stalled on an opening drawbridge in Wisconsin, USA.

A female motorist in Wisconsin had a heart stopping moment as the bridge she was driving on was raised to let a ship through.

The unnamed motorist failed to restart her car as the Maple-Oregon Bridge opened to a 45-degree angle to allow a ship to pass in Sturgeon Bay. As worried onlookers gazed up from below, the car’s emergency brake helped the woman defy gravity and remain stationary as the giant bridge opened. After the bridge swung shut, the lucky driver managed to re-start her car and continued on her way, uninjured.

Stairs vs escalator

"Take the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator and feel better” is something we often hear or read in the Sunday papers. Few people actually follow that advice. Can we get more people to take the stairs over the escalator by making it fun to do?

See the results here.

Valentines day survey

The most romantic word in the world is the French word for love, "Amour", according to a pre-Valentine's Day survey. Italian word "amore" secured second place. The Italian and Sapanish words "Bellissima," for "very beautiful," secured third place while "tesoro," for "My treasure" came fourth.

Italian language was voted the world's most romantic language. French came in second, followed by Spanish and Engilsh in joint third place.

Note - the least romantic way to say 'I Love you' was Japanese "watakushi-wa anata-wo ai shimasu."
