1 John 5

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God. By loving God and carrying out His commands, we demonstrate our love to children of God - which is not burdensome.
1 John 5:3-4 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.
There are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.

The witness of God is authentic and greater than the witness of men. He who has the Son has eternal life. If we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.
1 John 5:14-15 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of Him.
Pray for a brother who commits a sin that does not lead to death - so that God will give him life. We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one. The Son of God has given us an understanding.

John signs off this letter by asking us to keep ourselves away from idols.

1 John 4

Since many false prophets have entered the world, we are told not to believe every spirit - but test them. All spirits who do not confess Jesus Christ has come in the flesh are not of God, but of the Antichrist.
1 John 4:2-3 This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.
God is light and God is love. He sent his son to bring us forgiveness and new life. The proof that we share his life - his nature, is the love we show towards others.
1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
Love and obedience are bound together. If we love God, we need not fear the day of judgement.

1 John 3

God has lavished great love upon us that we should be called the children of God! The world does not know us because we know Him. When He is revealed, we shall be like Him, and see Him as He is. This hope is purifying.

Sin is lawlessness, blind to and unknowing of God. Whoever has been born of God does not sin; he who sins is of the devil, and does not love his brethren.
1 John 3:10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.
The message we have heard from the beginning is that we should love one another. Cain was wicked, and murdered his brother. No murderer has eternal life abiding in him. Christ’s laying down his life for us shows us love; we ought to do the same for our brethren.

Let us not love in word or in tongue, but in actions and in truth. Our heart will condemn us, or not condemn us. Whatever we ask we receive from Him. We should believe in the name of Jesus Christ, and love one another.
1 John 3:23 And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us.

1 John 2

John writes these things so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, Jesus Christ is our advocate with the Father. He is the propitiation not just for our sins, but for those of the whole world.

To know Christ is to keep his commandments. Those who claim to be in the light, but hate other believers are still walking in darkness. Only those who love fellow believers live in God's light.

John writes to the entire community of genuine believes encouraging them to remember God's forgiveness. He reflects three stages of spiritual maturity - 'Fathers', 'young men' and 'children'. He repeats some of what he said earlier.

The love command does not involve loving the world and it's temporary pleasures: lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride of life. John reminds us that world and it's desires are fading away, but the one who loves God lives forever.

John calls out saying this is the last hour, and many antichrists have come. He gives indication about the antichrist so that we are not led astray.
1 John 2:22-23 Who is the liar? It is whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ. Such a person is the antichrist - denying the Father and the Son. No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
The anointing which we have received is our protection against deception. We are to make sure we are not ashamed before Christ at His coming. Everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.

1 John 1

John's theme is 'God is light'. John spoke about Jesus Christ in his gospel. Here, he speaks about his own experience. John declares this to us so that we may share fellowship with the Father and His son Jesus Christ.

Those who have fellowship with him walk in light.
1 John 1:5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
We cannot say we have fellowship with Him if we walk in darkness. If we walk in the light, we have fellowship with each other, and are cleansed from our sins by the blood of Jesus Christ. If we say we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves.
