Overheard at the courts: “I want to play badminton at the Olympics so badly.”

Overheard at Habitat for Humanity: “I gave some Olympic gymnasts a job helping build a house. They were terrible with the ceiling and walls, but nailed the landing.”

Overheard in Hollywood: “Burt Reynolds wishes he could be at the Olympics. With all the canoeing and shooting he thinks it would be a natural for a remake of ‘Deliverance’.”

Overheard at the Aquatic Center: “Another USA medal? You’d think the Finns would have an advantage.”

Overheard at Gymnastic All-Around Finals: “I just KNEW that Gabby Douglas was a sure bet to win. Even her last name is an anagram for ‘USA Gold’.”

Overheard at Wrestling Center: “Greek athletes are really hoping to do well in the Olympics. If they win gold medals, they can use them as cash to pay their electric bill.”

Overheard in line: “Just got my tickets to the Olympic women’s beach volleyball final! Unfortunately, it’s Iran versus Saudi Arabia.”

Overheard at the Opening Ceremonies: “How about those Olympic uniforms? They’re made by Ralph Lauren and they’re beautiful. They’re colorful, they’re odd. I mean they look like the cast of ‘Glee.’”

Overheard at the White House: “President Obama said 1992 dream team was better than this year’s Olympic basketball team. Which is interesting because a lot of people think the 1992 president is better than this year’s president.”

Overheard in the Olympic Village: “Even though the Olympics take place during Ramadan, some Muslim athletes said they will not fast during games. Then, after sampling the British food, they said, on second thought, fasting sounds good.”

Overheard from some spectators: “I know the government has advised people to watch out that they’re not being sold fake 2012 Olympic tickets. I think I’ll be alright though. My tickets for the men’s wheelchair triple jump seem genuine enough.”

Overheard at the office: “We’re not allowed to watch the Olympics on TV at work today, but I guess everyone is okay with that. Whole place seems full of people happily yelling at their computers as they work.”

Overheard at NBC: “Olympic fishing began today and it was fed live on the ‘net to computers. Sadly no one got a good stream.”

Assumption of Mary - day 11

Father in heaven,
all creation rightly gives you praise,
for all life and all holiness come from you.
In the plan of your wisdom
she who bore the Christ in her womb
was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven.
May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness
and join in her hymn of endless love and praise.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Lam yowgad fi el-dahr, methlek ayatoha ‘l-bekr, le2anek fakakty el-asr, 3an Adam wal-3ar, ya sayedet el-akwan, ya fakhr el-eiman, ana 3abdek 7ayran, gharek fil-awzar.

There isn’t in all ages, anyone like you O Virgin, for you released the chains, and shame of Adam, O Lady of the creation, the pride of faith, your servant is in need, drowning because of sins.

3alen howa qadrek, la tatroky 3abdek (ya mariam), qasdy men ebnek, 3etqan men el-nar, le2anaky kher man yeshfa3, wa lel-do3a yesma3, we 3ana yedfa3, darabat el-makar.

Intercede for me, do not leave your servant, ask your son to save me, from the fire, For your intercession, is heard and accepted, and He defends from the attacks, of the adversary.

Qom enhad ya meskeen, wa ‘lbes thob el-yaqeen, wa qol amin amin, fa heya tashfa3 fil-7odar, wal-nazem el-meskeen, made7ha fi kol 7in maloh yom el-din, sewa sayedet el-abkar.

Assumption of Mary - day 8

A prayer to St. Mary:

Holy Virgin Mary, you are reigning in glory, with Jesus, your Son.
Remember us in our sadness. Look kindly on all who are suffering
or fighting against any difficulty.
Have pity on those who are separated from someone they love.
Have pity on the loneliness of our hearts.
Have pity on the weakness of our faith and love.
Have pity on those who are weeping, on those who are praying, on those who are fearful.
Holy Mother, please obtain for all of us hope and peace with justice.
