Mar 07

Tomorrow in class, we will be able to complete our syllabus.  We will cover portions including orthodoxy and other stories.  Then, for the next couple of weeks, we are going to have some fun activities, and discuss things outside our book, and watch a movie if possible.

My last lecture will be on April 25th and the topic I picked for the finale is from the poster in our class which reads, "Stand up for what is right even if you are the only one."  Kindly make sure you come and attend this lecture.

On that day, let's
- review what is right,

- examine the need for standing up for what is right,

- discuss some of the benefits and obstacles while standing up for what is right,

- examine how your friends and society will view and treat you while standing up for what's right,

- account for the sacrifices you have to make in order to stand up for what's right,

- the price tag you have to pay while standing up for what's right,

- the end results you gain while standing up for what's right.

Every aspect of this lecture is from my very own personal experience - my encounter with Truth, and I plan to deliver it Truthfully.  I already began preparations and am pouring in several hours into this talk, for April 25th.

I sincerely invite you to be there as a listener.

Help me, my Savior, to brew a big kettle of brotherly love and serve it with the  clean, sweet bread of human kindness.

Sunday - The Lord's Day
O God, I have prepared my house for you.  Please come into my heart as my honored guest so I may spend the day and the rest of my life in your presence.

Farewell speech

A priest was being honoured at his retirement dinner after many years in the parish. A leading local politician, who was also a member of the congregation, and parish 'board of directors' was chosen to make the presentation and give a brief farewell speech at the dinner. He was delayed so the priest decided to say his own few words while they waited.

"I got my first impression of the parish from the first confession I heard here. I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place. The very first person who entered my confessional told me he had stolen a television set and, when stopped by the police, had almost murdered the officer. He had stolen money from his parents and friends, always used obscene language, was embezzled from his place of business, sold several illegal drugs, cheated several people, and had always kept company with bad girls.  I was appalled. But as the days went on I knew that my people were not all like that and I had, indeed, come to a fine parish full of good and loving people."

Just as the priest finished his talk the politician arrived full of apologies at being late. He immediately began to make the presentation and give his speech.

"I'll never forget the first day our parish priest arrived," said the politician. "In fact, I had the honour of being the first one to go to him in confession."

Passion Play - status

Our Easter outing is picking up momentum and is gaining speed.

The word of mouth is spreading and we have more people showing interest, and they are either checking their avaialability or making themeslves available to come with us.

Hopefully we have a headcount by this Sunday.  I shall publish the list I have, shortly.  As of now, I am the only one who can drive with over 20 others confirmed, but cannot drive.  When time comes, I am positive, God will show us a way to get there and back.  Once we have a complete listing of headcount, we shall worry about transportation and logistics.

We are planning on going for the Saturday, March 20th show at 4:00 PM.

The blind girl

Once there was a blind girl who hated herself just because she was blind. She hated everyone, except her loving fiance. He was always there for her. Her fiance was pursuing her to marry him.  After much persuading, the blind girl told her fiance that if she only could see the world, she would marry him.

One day, a wonderful news reached the blind girl that someone donated a pair of eyes to her and she had to get ready for a surgery.  The surgery was successful and when her bandage was finally removed, the girl could see everything, including her fiance.

Her fiance asked her, "now that you can see the world, will you marry me?" The girl was shocked when she saw that her fiance was blind too.  She now refused to marry him.  Her fiance was heartbroken and walked away in tears.

Few weeks later, the girl received a letter from the boy saying, "Just take care of my eyes dear."

Guess who

Alexis, a young man, excitedly tells his mother he's fallen in love and that he is going to get married.  He tells her, 'Ma, I'm going to bring over 3 women and you must try and guess which one I'm going to marry.'

The mother agrees.

The next day, he brings three beautiful women into the house and sits them down on the couch and they chat for a while. Later, he says, 'Okay Mother dear, guess who I'm going to marry.'

She immediately replies, 'The one on the right.'

'That's amazing, Ma. You're correct. How did you know?'

The mother replies, 'I don't like her.'

Computers - the gender

A language instructor was explaining to her class that in French, nouns, unlike their English counterparts are grammatically designated as masculine or feminine.
"House," in French is feminine - "la maison."
"Pencil," in French is masculine - "le crayon."
One puzzled student asked, "What gender is computer?" The teacher did not know, and the word wasn't in her French dictionary. So, for fun she split the class into two groups appropriately enough, by gender, and asked them to decide whether "computer" should be a masculine or feminine noun.
Both groups were required to give top three reasons for their recommendation.
The men's group decided that computers should definitely be of the feminine gender ("la computer"), because:
1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic.
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else.
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for possible later retrieval.
The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be masculine gender ("le computer"), because:
1. They have a lot of data but they are still clueless.
2. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem.
3. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you'd waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.

Guess which group won?

The bridge

A man walking along a California beach was deep in prayer. All of a sudden he said out loud, "Lord grant me one wish."
Suddenly the sky clouded above his head and in a booming voice the Lord said, "Because you have TRIED to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish"
The man said, "Build a bridge to Hawaii, so I can drive over anytime I want to."
The Lord said, "Your request is very materialistic. Think of the logistics of that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take! I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of another wish, a wish you think would honor and glorify me."
The man thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, "Lord, I have been married and divorced four times. All of my wives said that I am uncaring and insensitive. I wish that I could understand women, I want to know how they feel inside, what they are thinking when they give me the silent treatment, why they cry, what they mean when they say 'nothing' and how I can make a woman truly happy"
After a few minutes God said, "You want two lanes or four on that bridge?"

Story of Life

Sometimes people come into your life
And you know right away that they were meant to be there.
To serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson,
or to help you figure out who you are or who you want to become.

You never know who these people may be,
possibly your roommate, neighbor, coworker, long lost, lover, or even a complete stranger,
but when you lock eyes with them you know at that very moment they will.

Everything happens for a reason.
Nothing happens by chance or by means of good luck.
Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness, and sheer stupidity
all occurs to test the limits of your soul.

Without these small tests, whatever they may be,
life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere.
It would be safe and comfortable, but dull and utterly pointless.

The people you meet who affect your life and the success and downfalls you experience,
help to create who you are and who you become.
Even the bad experiences can be learned from.
In fact, they are probably the most poignant and important ones.

If someone hurts you, betrays you, or breaks your heart,
forgive them, for they have helped you learn about trust
and the importance of being cautious when you open your heart.

If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally,
not only because they love you, but because in a way,
they are teaching you to love and how to open your heart and eyes to things.

Make every day count.
Appreciate every moment and take from those moments everything that you possibly can,
for you may never be able to experience it again.
Talk to people that you have never talked to before, and actually listen.
Let yourself fall in love, break free, and set your sights high.

Hold your head up because you have every right to.
Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself,
for if you don't believe in yourself, it will be hard for others to believe in you.

You can make of your life anything you wish.
Most importantly, create your own life and then go out and live it with absolutely NO regrets.
And learn a lesson in life each day that you live.

Students in trouble

Sexting - A female 8th grade student has been suspended and a male 8th grader has withdrawn after the girl allegedly texted an inappropriate photo of herself to the boy on February 22nd. Details here & here.

Is teen sexting a horrible thing?  Click here to find out more.

In case you students did not know, even receiving sexual images on your cell phones while you are under 18 years of age can get you in trouble with the law.  If you come across such content, delete the content immediately and inform your parents or a teacher.  These pictures in the hands of a neighborhood sex offender can put your life in danger.  Click here to see the sex offenders in your area - published with their street addresses and pictures.

Knife - An 18 year-old Cobb County student was arrested for allegedly bringing a knife to Lassiter High School.  Details here.  He is not allowed back to the school.

Take a moment and think about these students.  Do you want to be in such circumstances?  If your close friends are ones capable of getting into trouble, the odds are you will land up in the same trouble along with them.  Remember we talked about parents overly protecting kids - they want you to stay out of such troubles.

The email

A Minnesota couple decided to vacation to Florida during the winter. They planned to stay at the very same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel schedules. Not only were they seated separately, but also on different flights.  So, the husband left Minnesota and flew to Florida on Thursday. His wife would fly down the following day.

The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an e-mail to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her e-mail address, and without realizing his error, he sent the e-mail.

Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, TX, a widow had just returned home from her husband's funeral. He was a minister of many years who died of a sudden heart attack. The widow decided to check her e-mail, expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she fainted.

The widow's son rushed into the room, found his mother on the floor, and saw the computer screen which read:

To: My Loving Wife
Subject: I've Arrived
Date: Feb 25, 2010
I know you're surprised to hear from me. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send e-mails to your loved ones. I've just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then! Hope your journey is not as uneventful as mine was.
P.S. Sure is hot down here!

Hair cuts

Your haircut tells a great deal about you.  Grooming and preserving your hair is quite important with regard to your self confidence.  After all - that's one thing we all notice when we stand in front of the mirror.  Every time I have a haircut, I am bit nervous because if things get messed up, my next several weeks are going to be doomed and everybody in the world will notice it as if I have this huge rash on my face.

Having said that, few people are not scared of their haircuts at all.  Take a look at few interesting haircuts:
Bee hive

Blue rinse

Flower power

Hair Bridge

Handy Hairstyle for boys

Soccer cut

Disguise (I liked this guy's style!!)

Few haircare tips:

To minimize breakage of your hair, make sure that your hair is thoroughly wet before applying shampoo.

After applying shampoo, it's better to wash it with cold water.

Before using a blow dryer, towel dry your hair.  Too much heat can damage your hair.

Brusing your hair while it's still wet can break your hair.  Let it dry enough, before brushing long hair.

If you get static electricity while brushing, dampening your hairbrush will reduce the static.

Gel can give your hair a "wet" effect.

If you are one of those people who worries a lot about your hair appearence, use hair spray to hold the finished design in place.

James Joy has shown interest and volunteered to be the Program Coordinator for this trip. If you hear from James asking you for some help, kindly do your best to help James, and thus help ourselves.

Look and listen, feel and know. What you sincerely seek will come within your reach, if you simply allow it and see it.  Opportunity rarely looks the way you thought it would. Open your heart and open your mind to recognize it.

Each day, coming your way, is a fast-flowing stream of seemingly random events. Somewhere within them are the ones you asked for.

For each dream you have, life gives you the possibilities for achieving that dream. Your job is to see those possibilities and to act on them.

When you wish to go new places, you must accept that the road will be unfamiliar. Go with what feels right, even though it feels a little uncomfortable.

What you seek is coming to you. See it and have the faith to fully live it.

Angel Tomato

Some people are blessed with eyes to see Angels wherever they look.

Vicky Brenneman of California sliced open a tomato and above is what she found inside.  She was able to see the image of perfect angels inside.  She put it on display for everyone to see. She called it the 'Angel Tomato.'

Next time you slice a tomato into half, check to see if there is an angel inside.

Moral: We can't always tell from the outside who is truly and angel inside.

Boys night out

Sometimes, for a guy to have a boy's night out, it is necessary to get the approval of a Girlfriend/Fiance/Wife.  Here is a typical application form the ladies have come up with:

For those of you who cannot read legibly, here is the text of the application form:

Women drivers (2)

Yesterday I posted about a woman driver managing a stalled car on a drawbridge.  While that is serious, watch this video.

PS: Not all women drivers are like this.  I know women drivers know how to handle their cars pretty well (even at decent speeds) and are safe too.

My dad is faster than your dad

My dad is faster than your dad.  Aaaha - you think so?  Listen to this:

One day, three boys, Bart, Buddy and Chuck were on the school bus, when Bart started the time honoured game of paternal one upmanship.

Bart said, 'My dad's way faster than any of yours, he can throw a 120 mph fast ball, run from the mound, pick up his bat, and strike a home run.'

Buddy, the second boy said, 'Oh yeah? Well, my dad can fire a shell from his Magnum  run to the target and hold it up to make sure the shell hits the bulls eye' .

The last boy, Chuck, said, 'Your dads don't even come close to being faster than mine. My dad is a 10th grade teacher and even though he works every day at school until 4:00 PM, he still gets home by 3:30 PM.'

Lion and Tiger

Once upon a time, there lived two friends in the shade of a rock. It would sound strange, but one of them was a lion and the other was a tiger. They were friends since their childhood. They knew each other from the time, when they were too small to understand the difference between the lions and the tigers. Thus, their friendship was not at all strange to them.

Moreover, the part of the mountain under which they lived was peaceful; it could be due to the presence of a monk who lived under the same rock. He was a hermit, one who lives far away from worldly affairs. One day, the two friends got into a stupid argument for some unknown reason. The Tiger said,” Everyone knows that cold comes when the moon decreases from full to new”. The Lion said, “You are a stupid fellow. From where did you hear such nonsense? Everyone knows that cold comes when the moon increases from new to full”.

The argument between them became stronger and stronger. Both of them were firm at their own opinion. They could not arrive at any conclusion to resolve the growing disagreement. They even started calling bad names at each other, and getting into fights. After some time, when neither the lion nor the tiger was winning, they decided to go and ask the learned monk, who would definitely know the right answer.

Both of them went together to the peaceful monk and bowed respectfully before him. The hermit asked them the reason for their sudden arrival. They put their question before him and said, “Sir, only you can answer to this problematic question”. The hermit thought for a while and said, “It can be cold in any phase of the moon, from new to full and back to new again. It is the wind that brings the cold, whether from west or north or east. Therefore, both of you are right and neither of you is defeated by the other”.

The hermit also said, “Both of you share healthy friendship since your childhood. It is not good to get into arguments and think about separation. The most important thing is to live without conflict, to remain united. Unity is best by all means”. The Lion and the Tiger understood the message of the wise monk. They thanked him for his kind suggestion.  Both of them lived happily thereafter as good friends.

Moral: Weather comes and weather goes, but friendship remains forever.

Women driver

A woman was stranded in the air when her car stalled on an opening drawbridge in Wisconsin, USA.

A female motorist in Wisconsin had a heart stopping moment as the bridge she was driving on was raised to let a ship through.

The unnamed motorist failed to restart her car as the Maple-Oregon Bridge opened to a 45-degree angle to allow a ship to pass in Sturgeon Bay. As worried onlookers gazed up from below, the car’s emergency brake helped the woman defy gravity and remain stationary as the giant bridge opened. After the bridge swung shut, the lucky driver managed to re-start her car and continued on her way, uninjured.

Olympic rings

The Official Olympic Flag contains five interconnected rings on a white background. The five rings symbolize the five significant continents and are interconnected to symbolize the friendship to be gained from these international competitions.

The rings, from left to right, are blue, yellow, black, green, and red. These colours were chosen because at least one of them appeared on the flag of every country in the world.

Please join me in offering our condolences to Alina's grandfather, Mr. P.V. Abraham, who passed away in Banaglore, India.  Heard that Alina's mom is travelling to B'lore for the funeral.

Alina - on behalf of our class, we wish to express our sympathy in your grandfather's loss and to let you know that our thoughts are with your family.

Welcome to the month of March.

March' comes from the Roman 'Martius'. This was originally the first month of the Roman calendar and was named after Mars, the god of war.

March used to be the beginning of our calendar year. We changed to the 'New Style' or 'Gregorian calendar in 1752, and it is only since then when we the year began on 1st January.

Winter ends on March 20, 2010 at precisely 1:32 PM EST, and Spring begins.

The violet is the flower for the month of March.

St. Patricks day falls on March 17.  People wear green on that day, or risk getting pinched.  To save  you from getting pinched, as a reminder, I changed our website to green background  :-)

Days till Easter = 33

Marriage in heaven

On their way to get married, a couple had a fatal car accident, and both of them were killed.  Right after their death, they reached just outside Heaven’s gate and were waiting on St. Peter to do an intake. While waiting, they wondered if they could possibly get married in Heaven. St. Peter finally showed up and they told him their wish.

St. Peter said, "I don’t know, this is the first time anyone has ever asked. Let me go find out," and he left.

The couple sat there at the Heaven's gate for 3 months and began to wonder if they really should get married in Heaven. “What if it doesn’t work out?” they wondered. “Are we stuck together forever?”

St. Peter returned after yet another month, looked somewhat bedraggled. "Yes," he informed the couple. "You can get married in Heaven."

"Great," said the couple, "but what if things don’t work out? Could we also get a divorce in Heaven?"

St. Peter, red-faced, slammed his clipboard onto the ground!

"What’s wrong?" exclaimed the frightened couple.

"Come on!" St. Peter exclaimed. "It took me four months to find a priest up here! Do you have any idea how long it’s going to take me to find a lawyer!?

While we were talked about lawyers in class yesterday, I wanted to share this with you, instead we had to move on due to a short class after BBS.

Sunday, February 28, 2010

Today in class we talked briefly about the Great Lent.  One of the most frequently asked question during the lent season is, 'What Should I Give Up for Lent? Should I give up chocolate, ice cream, candy, soda, or meat?"  The most humorous answer I heard is someone giving up 'Lent' during the Lent season.  :-)

Many of us try to be more disciplined for Lent and give up something that we really like.  That's wonderful.  For centuries, fasting has always been an important tradition of Lent.  This year however, let us also consider other things that we can give up.

Give up complaining - Focus on gratitude instead.

Give up bitterness - Turn to forgiveness instead.

Give up worry - Trust in God instead.

Give up discouragement - Be full of hope.

Give up hatred - Return good for evil.

Give up anger - Be more patient.

Give up gossiping - Control your tongue.

And finally, 'be happy' that you are observing the lent.

Class on Feb 28

Today we discussed about the path to be followed for the remaining weeks.  I will be able to complete all of your portion by the next class.  We talked about the grades, BRS, Project CARS, etc.  For the symposium on Mar 21, I need one name, and those interested do let me know.

After we complete our lesson plan, let's discuss other interesting things related to Christianity and Bible, such as the 'Shroud of Turin', The Dead Sea Scrolls' and any other topic that may interest you.  We talked about watching the movie 'Passion of the Christ' in one of the classes.  Dates will be posted later on.

We discussed about going on a field trip.  I checked the dates for the musical play 'Atlanta Passion Play'.  It is held at the Atlanta Civic Center.  Below are the timings for Saturday.  Drop me an email as to which Saturday and show would you prefer.  Ticket prices are between $10 and $20.  Let's take a vote and decide date, time and tickets.

Saturday, March 20, 2010 11:00 AM
Saturday, March 20, 2010 4:00 PM
Saturday, March 27, 2010 11:00 AM
Saturday, March 27, 2010 4:00 PM

We need to book our tickets soon.  So, drop me a quick email after thinking it through.

I am not seeing any posting on the 'Xpress Yourself' board.  What's preventing you from writing your thoughts?  Come on - do express yourself.

Days till Easter = 34

This too shall pass

If I can endure for this minute
Whatever is happening to me,
No matter how heavy my heart is
Or how dark the moment may be-
If I can remain calm and quiet
With all the world crashing about me,
Secure in the knowledge God loves me
When everyone else seems to doubt me-
If I can but keep on believing
What I know in my heart to be true,
That darkness will fade with the morning
And that this will pass away, too-
Then nothing in life can defeat me
For as long as this knowledge remains
I can suffer whatever is happening
For I know God will break all of the chains
That are binding me tight in the darkness
And trying to fill me with fear-
For there is no night without dawning
And I know that my morning is near.
