Plans for Oct 11

Hope all of you had a good week.

Tomorrow, there is a 'parent - teacher meeting' at church after the Holy Qurbana.  Inform your parents to be there during the meeting.  Few items related to Sunday school will be discussed there.  Topics for discussion, to the best of my knowledge are (1) 80% attendance requirement for appearing for final exam (2) Criteria for passing the final exam (3) Withholding students who fail in final exam.  Many parents have raised objection to such guidelines.  By being present there, your parents will know what's going on.  Also it is the perfect forum to raise any concern(s) your parents may have.  You could alternatively email me if you want me to bring up any topic for the meeting.

It was announced in church last Sunday that the 'parent - teacher meeting' will be held during the general session time.  However, we do not know how long it will last - there is a good chance the general session will stretch beyond normal time.  In any case, here is my instruction to you: if the general session is over by the time I arrive, please stay within the class until I arrive.  You all can discuss any topic related to Sunday school and later provide me with a verbal report of what you discussed.

BRS # 2 is due tomorrow.  Those of you who have not turned it in yet, please do so.

Gospel Reading Oct 11

Gospel reading for Oct 11 is from Luke 16: 9 - 18.

9  I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.

10 "Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.

11  So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?

12  And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else's property, who will give you property of your own?

13  "No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."

14  The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.

15  He said to them, "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of men, but God knows your hearts. What is highly valued among men is detestable in God's sight.

16  "The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it.

17  It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.

18 "Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

A prayer for a shoe

A true story from New York City:

On a cold day in December, few years ago, a little boy, about 10-years-old, was standing before a shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering with cold.

A lady approached the young boy and said, "My, but you're in such deep thought staring in that window!"

"I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes," was the boy's reply.

The lady took him by the hand, went into the store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel He quickly brought them to her.

She took the little fellow to the back part of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet, and dried them with the towel.

By this time, the clerk had returned with the socks.. Placing a pair upon the boy's feet, she purchased him a pair of shoes.  She tied up the remaining pairs of socks and gave them to him.. She patted him on the head and said, "No doubt, you will be more comfortable now."

As she turned to go, the astonished kid caught her by the hand, and looking up into her face, with tears in his eyes, asked her.

"Are you God's wife?"

SAT test today

Good luck to all those who are appearing for SAT today.

Liars

A Sunday school teacher was giving her class the assignment for the next week.

"Next Sunday," she said, "we are going to talk about liars, and in preparation for our lesson I want you all to read the Seventeenth Chapter of Mark."

The following week, at the beginning of the class meeting, the teacher said, "Now then, all of you who have prepared for the lesson by reading the Seventeenth Chapter of Mark, please step to the front of the room."

About half the class rose and came forward.

"The rest of you may leave," said the teacher, "these students are the ones I want to talk to. There is no Seventeenth Chapter in the Book of Mark."

BRS # 2 Due

Just a reminder for those who have not yet turned in your BRS # 2.

The due date for BRS # 2 is next Sunday, October 11th.  If you need any help, feel free to ask.

One liners

Here are few church one liners for you to think about:

Don't let your worries get the best of you; remember, Moses started out as a basket case.

Some people are kind, polite, and sweet-spirited until you try to sit in their pews.

Many folks want to serve God, but only as advisors.

It is easier to preach ten sermons than it is to live one.

When you get to your wit's end, you'll find God lives there.

People are funny; they want the front of the bus, the middle of the road, and the back of the church.

Opportunity may knock once, but temptation bangs on your front door forever.

Quit griping about your church; if it was perfect, you couldn't belong.

God Himself does not propose to judge a man until he is dead. So why should you?

Some minds are like concrete thoroughly mixed up and permanently set.

Peace starts with a smile

A lot of church members who are singing "Standing on the Promises" are just 'sitting on the premises'.

We were called to be God's witnesses, not lawyers or judges.

You be fishers of men. You catch them - He'll clean them.

Coincidence is when God chooses to remain anonymous.

Don't put a question mark where God put a period.

Don't wait for 6 strong men to take you to church.

Forbidden fruits create many jams.

God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called.

God grades on the cross, not the curve.

God loves everyone, but probably prefers "fruits of the spirit" over "religious nuts!"

God promises a safe landing, not a calm passage.

He who angers you, controls you!

If God is your Co-pilot - swap seats!

Prayer: Don't give God instructions -- just report for duty!

The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us.

The Will of God never takes you to where the Grace of God will not protect you.

We don't change the message, the message changes us.

You can tell how big a person is by what it takes to discourage him.

'1 cross + 3 nails = 4 given' is the best religious mathematical equation.

Better life

Here are few tips for a healthy living:

Take a 10-30 minute walk every day. And while you walk, smile. It is the ultimate anti-depressant.

Sit in silence for at least 10 minutes each day.

Buy a DVR and tape your late night shows and get more sleep.

When you wake up in the morning complete the following statement, 'My purpose is to __________ today.

Live with the 3 E's -- Energy, Enthusiasm, and Empathy.

Play more games and read more books than you did last year.

Make time to practice meditation and prayer. They provide us with daily fuel for our busy lives.

Spend time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of 6.

Dream more while you are awake.

Eat more foods that grow on trees and plants and eat less food that is manufactured in plants.

Drink green tea and plenty of water. Eat blueberries, wild Alaskan salmon, broccoli, almonds & walnuts.

Try to make at least three people smile each day.

Clear clutter from your house, your car, your desk and let new and flowing energy into your life.

Don't waste your precious energy on gossip, OR issues of the past, negative thoughts or things you cannot control. Instead invest your energy in the positive present moment.

Realize that life is a school and you are here to learn. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.

Eat breakfast like a king/queen, lunch like a prince/princess and dinner like a college kid with a maxed out charge card.

Smile and laugh more. It will keep the NEGATIVE BLUES away.

Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does.

You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

Make peace with your past so it won't spoil the present.

Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

No one is in charge of your happiness except you.

Frame every so-called disaster with these words: 'In five years, will this matter?'

Forgive everyone for everything.

What other people think of you is none of your business.

However good or bad a situation is, it will change.

Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.

Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful.

Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.

Always believe the best is yet to come.

No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.

Do the right thing!

Communicate with your family often.

Each night before you go to bed complete the following statements: I am thankful for __________. Today I accomplished _________.

Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.

Enjoy the ride. Remember this is not Disney World and you certainly don't want a fast pass.  You only have one ride through life so make the most of it and enjoy the ride.

Wish you a healthy life.

Fruits

In a contest held at a farm, four fruits (an apple, a banana, an orange, and a pear) were placed in four closed boxes (one fruit per box). People may guess which fruit is in which box. 123 people participated in the contest. When the boxes were opened, it turns out that 43 people guessed none of the fruits correctly, 39 people  guessed one fruit correctly, and 31 people have guessed two fruits correctly.

The Question: How many people guessed three fruits correctly, and how many people have guessed four fruits correctly?

We should ask our friend who is talking SAT this weekend to help us out.

Creation

When God was creating woman, an angel came by and said: "Why spend so much time on the woman?  You already created the man, and creating a woman should be easy."

And the Lord answered:

"Have you seen all the specifications I have to meet to shape her? She must be washable, but not made of plastic, have more than 200 moving parts which all must be replaceable and she must function on all kinds of food, she must be able to embrace several kids at the same time, give a hug that can heal anything from a bruised knee to a broken heart and she must do all this with only two hands."

The angel was impressed. "Just two hands...impossible! Too much work for one day...wait until tomorrow and then complete her."

"I will not", said the Lord. "I am so close to completing this creation, which will be the favorite of my heart. She cures herself when sick and she can work 18 hours a day."

The angel came nearer and touched the woman. "But you have made her so soft, Lord."

"She is soft, and she is my most beautiful creation", said the Lord, "But I have also made her strong. You can't imagine what she can endure and overcome."

"Can she think?" the angel asked.

The Lord answered: "Not only can she think, she can reason and negotiate."

The angel touched the woman's cheek. "Lord, it seems this creation is leaking! You have put too many burdens on her."

"She is not leaking...it's a tear" the Lord corrected the angel.

"What's it for?" asked the angel.

And the Lord said, "Tears are her way of expressing grief, her doubts, her love, her loneliness, her suffering and her pride."

This made a big impression on the angel; "Lord, you are genius. You thought of everything. The woman is indeed marvelous, strong and beautiful!"

"Indeed she is! Woman has strengths that amaze man. She can handle trouble and carry heavy burdens. She holds happiness, love and opinions. She smiles when feeling like screaming. She sings when she feels like crying, cries when she is happy and laughs when she is afraid.

She fights for what she believes in. Stands up against injustice. She doesn't take "no" for an answer, when she can see a better solution. She gives herself so her family can thrive. She takes her friend to the doctor if she is afraid. Her love is unconditional.

She cries when her kids are victorious. She is happy when her friends do well. She is glad when she hears of a birth or a wedding. Her heart is broken when a next of kin or friend dies. But she finds the strength to get on with life. She knows that a kiss and a hug can heal a broken heart.

There is only one thing wrong with her…

SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT SHE IS WORTH."

Helping the neighbor

A farmer had 17 sheep.  Last week when he died, he left a will to distribute his wealth to his three sons.  In his will, the farmer stated that his oldest son should get 1/2, his middle son should get 1/3, and his youngest son should get 1/9 of all the sheep. The sons, who did not want to end up with half sheep or fractions of sheep, sat for days trying to figure out how many sheep each of them should get.

The farmer had a 17 year old neighbor who was appearing for the SAT exam on Oct 10th.  The boy went over to his neighbor to see how the three sons were doing after their father’s death. The three sons told him their problem.  Having solved hundreds of logical reasoning problems while preparing for his SAT, and thinking for a while, the boy said: “I’ll be right back!” He went away, and when he came back, the three sons could divide the sheep according to their father’s will, and in such a way that each of them got a whole number of sheep.

Here is the question: How did SAT preparation help the boy solve the problem?

Let's wait till Oct 10th to see how he does on his SAT.  He promised me he'll share his experience with us.

Good Luck SAT takers!!

Things not to say

Many of you are getting your drivers permit these days.  It is always a good idea to maintin the speed limit.

If you’re ever been pulled over for speeding (or any other reason), you probably should not say any of the following statements to the officer:

10. I thought you had to be in good physical condition to be a police officer.

9. Sorry, Officer, I didn’t realize my radar detector wasn’t plugged in.

8. Hey – I was just on my way to Krispy Kreme. Want to come?

7. I was trying to keep up with traffic. I know there are no other cars around. That’s how far ahead of me they are.

6. Hey pal, I pay your salary!

5. Aren’t you the guy from the Village People?

4. Hey, you must’ve been doing’ about 125 mph to keep up with me. Good job!

3. Do you know why you pulled me over? Okay, as long as one of us does.

2. You’re not gonna check the trunk, are you?

And

1. When the Officer says “Son, your eyes look red. Have you been drinking?” you probably shouldn’t respond with, “Well, Officer, your eyes look glazed. Have you been eating doughnuts?”

Out of Egypt

On the way back from church on a Sunday, Johnny was asked by his mother what he had learned in Sunday School.

"Well, mom, our teacher told us how God sent Moses behind enemy lines on a rescue mission to lead the Israelites out of Egypt.  When he got to the Red Sea he had his engineers build a pontoon bridge and all the people walked across safely. Then he used his walkie-talkie to radio headquarters for reinforcements. They sent bombers to blow up the bridge and saved the Israelites."

"Now, Johnny, is that really what your teacher taught you?" his mother asked.

"Well, no, mom, but if I told it the way the teacher did, you'd never believe it."

SAT Exam

Good luck to all those who are appearing for SAT exam on Oct 10th.

Did u know?

Did you know:

"I am." is the shortest complete sentence in the English language.

The youngest Pope was 11 years old.

The only two days of the year in which there are no professional sports games (MLB, NBA,NHL, or NFL), are the day before and the day after the Major League All-Star Game.

The sentence, "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." uses every letter in the alphabet. It was developed by Western Union to test telex or two way communications.

Pearls melt in vinegar.

Ten percent of the Russian government's income comes from the sale of vodka.

A duck's quack doesn't echo, and no one knows why.

Each king in a deck of playing cards represents a great king from history. Spades-King David; Clubs-Alexander the Great; Hearts-Charlemagne; and Diamonds-Julius Caesar.

Clans of long ago that wanted to get rid of their unwanted people without killing them used to burn their houses down - hence the expression, "to get fired."

Hershey's Kisses are called that because the machine that makes them looks like it's kissing the conveyor belt.

The name Jeep came from the abbreviation used in the army for the "General Purpose" vehicle, G.P.

Only one person in two billion will live to be 116 or older.

If you put a raisin in a glass of champagne, it will keep floating to the top and sinking to the bottom.

Snails can sleep for 3 years without eating.

The term "whole 9 yards" came from WWII fighter pilots in the South Pacific. When arming their airplanes on the ground, the 50-caliber machine gun ammo belts measured exactly 27 feet. If the pilots fired all their ammo at a target, it got the "whole 9 yards" (1 yard = 3 feet).

The fingerprints of Koala bears are virtually indistinguishable from those of humans, so much so that they could be confused at a crime scene.

The Interstate system was designed so that one mile in every five must be straight. These straight sections are usable as airstrips in times of war or other emergencies. The Interstates official name is The National Defense Highway System.

Months that begin on a Sunday will always have a "Friday the 13th."

The nursery rhyme Ring Around the Rosey is a rhyme about the bubonic plague. Infected people with the plague would get red circular sores (Ring around the Rosey...). These sores would smell very bad so people would hide flowers on their bodies in an attempt to mask the smell ("pocket full of posies..."). People who died from the plague would be burned to reduce the spread of the disease ("ashes, ashes, we all fall down").

Perception

Here is a view about our perceptions I came across:

-----------
Do our perceptions die? Do you remember hearing the words "wild imagination" or "over active imagination"? Remember the days when we would entertain ourselves for the entire day with our daydreams of doing this or that when we "grew" up?

As we grow in experiences so does our memory bank of "warnings" and the likes thereof resulting from those experiences. As a youth, our experiences with life are few and influenced by our parents protective environment, but our imaginations are wilder, unencumbered, less restrained by self so to speak, to enjoy our dreams or desires (within reason).

Dreams are our perceptions in life. To say our perceptions "in" life are based on our experiences is not supported. To say our perception "of" life is based on our experiences is true, but not the focus of what creates our perception? What impedes the advancement of our positive perceptions in living life is the reactions to our warnings stored in our memory bank, experiences.

Our perceptions are influenced by laziness (lack of dedicating time to think) and will automatically revert back to "warnings" (negative) as it should be. But as time changes daily, so should one be willing to modify one's perception of truths embraced (truth exists only if you embrace it as such).

When we are lazy in managing our future and feeding our perception of what we desire in life, we reply on the words of others to influence or shape our perception (under someone else's control) of what is reality.

We all have been influenced by the words of others. For an example of influenced perception, I have a dear friend who will not drink coffee because he says it is bad for the heart. I asked why he believed that statement and he replied; "That has been the belief for years among health professionals.". Embracing that as the truth as he did, based on someone else's belief and never investigating it any further, influenced his perception.

I shared with him that the fact is scientists are waking up to the health benefits of coffee! A group of international scientists found that coffee filters can remove from 78 to 90 percent of dissolved heavy metals such as lead and copper from tap water. The researchers suggest that the results may be evidence that daily human exposure to heavy metals in cities around the world may be greatly overestimated, and that current public health risk assessment models are inaccurate where coffee makes up a large proportion of water consumption.

Yes, another perspective on what is considered: "bad." The point is to allow oneself the freedom to enjoy life by being young of thought, dare to dream, believe, and do what satisfies the needs of your soul.

Risk more than others think is safe. Care more than others think is wise. Dream more than others think is practical. Expect more than others think is possible.

Tiny Angel

I am a tiny angel
I'm smaller than your thumb:
I live in people pockets
That's where I have my fun.
I don't suppose you've seen me,
I'm too tiny to detect:
Though I'm with you all the time,
I doubt we've ever met.

Before I was an Angel
I was a fairy in a flower:
God, Himself, hand-picked me,
And gave me Angel power.

Now God has many Angels
That He trains in Angel pools:
We become His eyes, and ears, and hands
We become His special tools.

And because God is so busy,
With way too much to do;
He said that my assignment
Is to keep close watch on you.
When He tucked me in your Pocket
He blessed you with Angel care;
Then told me to never leave you,
And I vowed always to be there.

With Friends

If there is one ingredient in which adds warmth and love to our lives
It is friendship.
If there is one relationship to help us through all the others
It is friendship.

Friends surround us with the beauty of their caring.
With friends we can share what we see, what we feel and what we love.
Friends help us with our problems because they listen.
And as they listen we begin to hear the language of our own hearts.

With friends we can walk along the remembered paths of our lives
And completely share our experiences.
With friends we can work the soil of forgotten dreams
That needed to be tended and nurtured once again.

With friends we can plant the seed of our hearts new dreams.
We can always return to a friend like going back to a special place
And find the same warm feeling unchanged by time or distance.

Life gives us friends so we can share the precious times and memorable moments
Of being children, and teenagers, and adults, and parents, and grandparents.
Life gives us friends so we can share the growing up
And growing down and old.

With friends we have a place to go to be accepted and understood.
Together we can laugh.
Together we can cry.

Our thoughts are heard, our feelings are held in the heart of a friend.
With friends our lives are made more full, more rich,
More open, beautiful and blessed!!

Oct 4

Few things for your attention:

1.  Today it was announced in the Church that there will be a parent-teacher meeting next Sunday, Oct 11th, after the Church. Several parents have raised concern about few decisions that were taken during the last meeting.  Tell me what you think - so that I can be your voice in that meeting. If you keep quiet, it means you are ok with all what was decided.  Please ask your parent(s) to be present during that meeting. I'll be attending that meeting to discuss topics pertaining to our class.

2.  All of you were present in the class, except Alina Thomas.  Alina had called me yesterday to inform me that she was out sick - nice gesture Alina.  If you are sick, it is better to stay back, take some rest and get well soon.  Just call me and inform me.

3.  In class, we watched 'Peter's denial' and talked about the circumstances that made Peter deny knowing Jesus Christ despite being his favorite disciple.  Let me check if there are other movies that we can discuss in class.  If you have any ideas, feel free to inform me - I am always looking for bright ideas.

4.  We talked about BRS today in class.  Turn in whatever you have.  If you find the question to be difficult, skip that, and do your best.  So far, I received BRS from Anabella.

5.  After Sunday school, I attended the General Body meeting today.  It was decided that the Christmas program will be held in our church.  We will hence stage something on a small scale, as part of our class program.  If you have any ideas for Christmas program, do send them in.  I already received one idea from one student so far.  Starting November, we will discuss Christmas program every Sunday.

6.  I've been extremely busy these days on all weekends for the month of October.  If you really need to reach me on a weekend, please feel free to call me. I am checking my mails, by calling me you will get a quicker response.  I'll respond to your mails on weekdays.

Have a safe week.

Gospel Reading Oct 4

Gospel reading for October 4th is St. Mark 2: 23 - 28.

23 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain.

24 The Pharisees said to him, "Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?"

25 He answered, "Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need?

26 In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions."

27 Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.

28 So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

We can see here the ministry of Jesus being under close scrutiny by other religious leaders.  One particular area of interest is the observance of Sabbath.

I have a Jewish neighbor and he tells me how strict the Jewish fasting is. Recently, they celebrated the Jewish New Year, Yom Kippur.  They are not even supposed to look into the mirror, get dressed up, or eat anything all day.  All they are supposed to do is pray at the synagogue.
.
The leaders are criticizing the disciples for picking grains on Sabbath.  Jesus replies, ""The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath."
